Are All Those Smoothies Doing You Dirty?
I know. Every influencer on IG is posting their daily green smoothie, juice or pretty salad. 🙄
For whatever reason, the second you go on a health kick or decide to eat “clean” (don’t get me started on this term) you start thinking you need to consume smoothies and salads every damn day (the greener the better) and if you don’t you’re a failure.
I mean any “health food” store or restaurant you come across will be glorifying the smoothie loaded with greens and super foods.
Well what if I told you that shit is overrated and probably doing more harm than good? Girl, I’d rather you go to a pub and order a steak and potatoes than get a green smoothie or salad at the juice bar :)
A few reasons why I don’t love a smoothie:
Smoothies put out your “digestive fire,” think of your digestive fire as the stomach acid, enzymes and bile needed to break down your food. What is an easy way to put out a fire? Cold liquids.
Not only that, digestion starts in the brain with the sight and smell of food and the production of saliva while you chew. This sends a signal to the brain that it’s time to eat and to start producing digestive juices.
Even if your smoothie is liquid, you still need to break it down + absorb + assimilate the nutrients from the food with these juices that no longer exist due to your cold lifeless smoothie.
No fire / no juice = digestive distress
Smoothies are loaded with thyroid suppressing ingredients like nut butters, nut milks + raw leafy greens.
Mmmmm who doesn’t want a nice big glass of rancid nuts, estrogen, heavy metals+ toxins?
I’l have 2 please! Because you know damn well you’ll just be starving an hour later because of how unsatisfying it was.
Not only that but the very process that smoothies are made (blended) allows pathogenic aerobic bacteria to thrive- you are just encouraging it.
If you insist on having a smoothie…
- Make sure you chew it + smell it + its not freezing cold
- Ditch the raw vegetables + nut butters
- Consume it with a meal. Smoothies are not meals.
- Make sure you include protein.
- Include fruit, collagen, dairy…
But in all honesty, for the love of your digestive system ditch the smoothies!
