The Truth About Nut Butters

Are you addicted to nut butters? I know, I called you out.

I get it. My middle name should have been peanut butter back in the day.

If this doesn’t say something, when I went to do research on this topic I found legit “Peanut Butter Addiction Support Groups” online. When I started looking into this further I realized the nut butter addicts were among these 4 categories:

1. Athletes, runners + Youtube bikini competitors

2. People under the assumption that nut butters are a great source of protein (great marketing JIF! You get about 8 grams of protein at best in 2 tablespoons of nut butter.)

3. Those restricting whole food groups like dairy, meat, sugar, carbs and fats

5. Those restricting calories, not eating enough throughout the day and binging on nut butters thinking they are the “healthier” option

What do all these people have in common? Being under-nourished and under-fed. Your body is craving nourishment, it is deficient in energy and nutrients NOT nut butter.

Nut butters are not a bio-available form of nutrients or a good source of fat. They are PUFAs after all which will just irritate your intestines, mess up your thyroid, fuck up your hormones due to their estrogenic effects and cause a rancid, toxic shit storm in your cells.

I remember when I was at my worst restricting food and working out like a maniac back in the day, I would literally be waiting for 5 o’clock to hit at my office job and run home, jonsing for that peanut butter and dark chocolate I was about to binge on before my second workout of the day.

Next time you go to reach for that nut butter ask yourself “what does my body really need right now?”

Evaluate whether you ate enough that day. Are you restricting things like carbs and sugar? Did you have enough protein from animal sources? Are you getting enough saturated fat sources from coconut, butter, dairy, meat and eggs?

Put down the nut butta (boston accent came out there) and nourish yourself. 9x out of 10 that nut butter addiction will be something of the past.
