Stressed is desserts spelled backwards: How sugar is medicine for your hormones

Alright, who’s the asshole that decided to make sugar the bad guy? You fool.

Clearly these people do not understand basic physiology (especially female) and how sugar is utilized in the body or have any desire to help people understand WHY their cells are not using sugar well.

Sugar = energy baby!

And hold your horses. I’m not saying to go pound down a chocolate cake, box of cereal or a donut from costco. Not all sugar is created equal.

But I will tell ya, there is nothing wrong with you for wanting sugar, you are not a sugar addict.

Crave chocolate before your period? That is your bodies desire for magnesium and energy. See? Our bodies are so intelligent. Listen.

It’s funny how lost we get when the stress of life takes over. Funny, that is when we should be listening to our bodies and taking assessment the most.

As kids we always had bedtime snacks, we ate 3 meals a day and 2 snacks, we wanted sugar and comfort foods during times of stress.

Now we think we should get some badge of honor for skipping dessert, avoiding fruit and honey, fighting the urge to have that chocolate, skipping a snack before bed (even tho we are hungry).

A badge of honor for downright starving ourselves of what our bodies need. In the name of what? A society driven perfect body?

Over it.

Sugar is medicine if used appropriately.

As mary poppins would say, “A little bit of sugar helps the cortisol go down, helps the cortisol go down”

What you are told is causing your health problems vs. What is actually causing your health problems

Girlfriend. Listen up. It’s not that simple.

Eliminating dairy, sugar and meat to try and fix your symptoms is LAZY.

You heard me. It’s lazy. It likely won’t solve your issues but certainly puts a nice sparkly bandaid on them for the time being.

Well that is, until these eliminations stop working and you are eliminating hundred other foods or jumping from one diet to another in hopes of finding relief and #health.

Then when all fails you finally go hire someone to help you after you have completely ignored the signals and signs of what your body is telling you it ACTUALLY needs (hint hint everything on the right).

Do you really think your body is telling you to eliminate 3 of the most nutrient dense foods on the planet for the sake of your health? Give me a break.

Acne? Eliminate dairy. Insulin resistant or diabetes? Eliminate sugar. Inflammation and hormonal? Eliminate meat.

If you work with a practitioner and their solution to your problems is eliminating food groups and macronutrients without putting proper assessment into anything on the right, they are LAZY.

These blanket recommendations are wild, are you sick of them yet?

99% of your problems will be fixed simply by:

1. Eating a traditional nutrient rich diet
2. Ditching processed, PUFA filled garbage
3. Getting enough sleep, sunshine, and joy
4. Eliminating negative self-talk and toxins
5. Getting stress in check and living a simple life
6. Always supporting digestion and minerals

And for the love of whatever you believe in stopping obsessing over everything that goes in your mouth and every symptom you experience. Your body is always evolving, changing, being exposed to things, adapting and finding homeostasis. It’s OKAY to have symptoms. Congrats, you are human.

Due to the overwhelming amount of bullshit on the internet being fed to us and sold to us on the daily it has become impossible to actually listen to our bodies and understand what they need and are craving.

We would rather starve ourselves of our own innate needs and then continue to deprive ourselves by now eliminating dairy, meat and sugar – the three MVPs that we were given on earth to keep us thriving.

9 Lies You Have Been Told About Health and Your Body

Talk about confusing and stressful as hell.

If we followed all this advice we would be loaded with synthetic hormones, energy deficient, eating loads of PUFAs, ridden with disease and digestive issues, starving and malnourished AF.

So what’s the actual truth?

Birth control is classified as a carcinogen. Yes, it’s that harmful and does not get to the root of your symptoms but rather masks them with synthetic hormones.

No you can not get pregnant all month long! You have a tiny window you can get pregnant each cycle, learn the FAM method and ditch the birth control.

Meat, diary and saturated fat are some of the most nutritious foods on planet earth. You could sustain life and thrive off of dairy alone if you needed to, it is that nutritious.

Plant based diets are void of so many bio-available nutrients, are highly estrogenic, loaded with rancid PUFAs, and simply do not work for our physiology.

Sugar and carbs? They are your body’s preferred fuel source. Without it your body will have to go through a super stressful process to create it’s own from other resources. Eliminating sugar and carbs does not fix insulin resistance but actually makes you more insulin resistant.

Seed cycling and cruciferous veggies, take about adding to the estrogenic, hormonal shit storm you are trying to fix in the first place.

Dairy is causing your acne? Come on. Not eating quality dairy, having a history of low carb dieting or an estrogenic plant based diet and that wrecked gut of yours is likely the culprit.

No. You can not lose weight and reverse symptoms in 30 days with some detox or cleanse. Stop falling for that BS and stop using bandaid diets to help with symptoms.

Imagine starving yourself willingly? Fasting is a massive stressor on the female body and will wreck havoc on your hormones. Every study done on fasting and the benefits is done on men. Men don’t have menstrual cycles.

The blanket advice to eat less and exercise more. Talk about ruining your metabolism.

This is why knowledge is power. All this advice seems to work short term, until it doesn’t and you are back at square one.

Your Metabolism Runs on Sugar and Carbs!

Yup. SUGAR, your metabolism runs on sugar and carbs! Are you shook?

I know I have talked about the importance of metabolism but here is a quick metabolism 411 and why I emphasize it.

To put it simply, your metabolism is how well you take in nutrients for energy and has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not you will be fat or skinny.

Symptoms of a sluggish metabolism:

⫸ cold hands and feet
⫸ digestive symptoms
⫸ wacky hormones + period probs
⫸ acne + dry skin
⫸ thinning hair
⫸ weak bones or teeth
⫸ frequent urination
⫸ low sex drive
⫸ brain fog
⫸ weight fluctuations
⫸ poor sleep
⫸ feeling irritated, depressed, angry, + anxious all the time

Let’s break this down real quick. We eat carbs which turns into sugar (glucose), the glucose turns into the stored form glycogen in the liver, the glycogen stored in the liver cells regulates the enzymes that convert inactive T4 thyroid hormone to active T3 hormone. The thyroid runs your metabolism which as I just said runs the show for every process in the body.

If we don’t supply our bodies with sugar then it will start eating it’s own tissues, yup it will literally start eating you alive. YUM!

This is also a super inflammatory and stressful process. Just because it is something our body can do, does not mean it should. This should be your bodies last resort and should only be used for backup in the case of famine to keep you alive.

This is why low carb diets and fasting do not work! You are starving your thyroid and liver of what it needs to help you survive and thrive!

And no girlfriend that doesn’t mean you should go face first into a box of donuts to save your liver and thyroid. We need quality carbs and sugar but we also need lots of protein, saturated fat, minerals and amino acids to support your metabolism. Nourish those cells!

Sugar and Carbs are Not Causing (insert symptom or disease here)

No. Sugar is not the root cause of diabetes, insulin resistance, heart disease, hypothyroidism, insomnia, hormonal imbalances, adrenal fatigue, weight gain, digestive issues… Should I go on?

For as long as I can remember we have been blaming sugar for every health ailment known to man. How many times have you heard from a healthcare professional that you have to eliminate carbs + sugar to be healthy?

But let me ask you.

How can something be so detrimental to our health when it is what our bodies, our cells, require to function optimally? Really, think about that for a second. Our bodies preferred + optimal source of fuel is glucose (sugar).

It’s never been about the sugar. It’s all about consuming the right types of sugar + eliminating PUFAs (nuts, seeds, + vegetable oils).

Hear me out.

PUFAs in your bloodstream compete with sugar in your bloodstream + block your cells from being able to metabolize your blood sugar.

When we are no longer giving our body it’s preferred source of fuel, our body begins to release stress hormones adrenaline + cortisol to keep you alive + prevent your blood sugar from dropping too low.

First the rise of adrenaline triggers stored PUFAs to be released into your blood stream which then prevents your body from being able to use sugar promoting insulin resistance of the cell + cell death.

Then as cortisol rises + breaks down protein this causes glucose to surge that is then blocked from entering your cells + then causes more adrenaline to rise, which leads to more insulin resistance + more cell death.

THIS cycle is what causes carb intolerance + insulin issues.

But Laura I feel so good being low carb. Well girlfriend, it’s only a bandaid, the real problem is that your cells are clogged and you are not able to use glucose appropriately.

Side note: your not addicted to sugar, your body is probably just starving + craving nourishment from over-consumption of PUFAs that have been starving your cells of glucose.

Sure it may be trendy + short term you may eliminate carbs + feel great until your metabolism is wrecked, your thyroid sucks, your liver isn’t functioning, your digestion is terrible, + your hormones are wack.
