Has Diet Culture Wrecked Your Gut?

Diet culture. When eating a traditional, nutritionally supportive diet goes out the window and all that matters is whatever the next trendy physique is in style. Whatever the next most profitable and trendy way of eating is that will give you false promises that you will reach your health and weight loss goals. Restrictive diets. Low carb. Fasting. Only eating if you deserve it. Food is the enemy. Excessive exercise. Cheat days. Skinny teas. Appetite suppressants. Detoxes No pain, no gain. 1200 calorie diets. Glorified eating disorders. You know the drill. We have gone from “heroin chic” being in style in the 90’s, zero curves and being malnourished AF to now being obsessed with big booties and six packs. Not to mention all the other fad physiques in between these 2 eras. It’s one big mind fuck. Let’s see what’s in style in a few years that we can all strive to be. 🙄 One thing I know for sure. Diet culture is ruining our health, our metabolism and our digestive system. It is putting us in a chronic stressed out state. What does our digestion require to run optimally? Lots and lots of nutrients AND a robust well functioning metabolism. Funny how dieting actually down regulates and destroys our metabolisms huh? Talk about false promises. One thing I know for sure is I will never look like Megan Fox or whoever the hell the world idolizes as a vision of beauty. And you know what, that is okay. I am not willing to starve myself, live a boring life and have my health go to shit to strive to be something I am not and neither should you. We all have false expectations of what our bodies should look like. Look at your family, look at your genetics. Let’s be realistic here. Look at other markers to determine health. Weight, restriction, ability to workout excessively and your will to not eat does not say anything about your bodies overall health. Basic Bitch Health Drinks That May Not be So “Healthy”

Who here feels personally victimized by the diet industry? Influencers? Marketers? Ya. Me too. Let’s stick with the “basic bitch” theme shall we? A basic bitch is most likely a toxic bitch and also a REAL good marketer. Throw any good looking chick in front of the screen claiming something healed their skin, their hair, or they lost weight and you bet your ass you will be throwing money at them to buy these products. I mean, hell these marketers are smart! They understand the way the human brain works and that most of our drivers come from wanting to look a certain way or comparing ourselves to others. This highly filtered, fake world makes us believe these people are healthy and have it all and we need exactly what they have. They are just profiting off our insecurities. The fact that most of us don’t feel well or are looking to lose weight is also another driver. Honestly, when I felt at my worst I would have given my left tit to feel better. TAKE ALL MY MONEY. I WANT TO BE YOU. I’l tell you right now, a shake, a supplement, some fancy drink will not help you lose weight or feel better. You see, REAL food does not need marketing. REAL food from nature that our body recognizes, is bioavailable and can use as nourishment doesn’t need to be sold or marketed. We have just gotten so lost with conveniences of modern day living and social media influence that we are no longer listening to what our body truly needs. In reality these drinks are just filled with broken promises, no ingredient transparency, and you are just left with an empty wallet because damn girl, this shit is expensive! And a scam. We are all being played. I’ve said it before and I’l say it again, you don’t need modern inventions to be healthy. Real nourishment and health does not need marketing. Don’t fall victim to these nutrition fads!

Cruciferous Vegetables + DIM Won’t Balance Your Hormones

So you walk into your holistic docs office with hormonal complaints of breast tenderness or pain, migraines/ headaches, heavy or irregular periods, cystic acne, PMS, anxiety, low libido, fatigue, fibroids, endo, PCOS, and/or weight gain.

They either runs some testing, most likely a blood panel that won’t tell you anything or they just tell you to take some DIM and eat more cruciferous vegetables to help eliminate excess estrogen. You leave thinking OMG I found my answer, this supplement and those vegetables will save me!

Girl, hold your horses!

There is so much more work that needs to be done before slugging down loads of cruciferous vegetables on the daily and taking a DIM supplement.

Not to mention they are probably causing a hormonal shit show. When cooked and in moderation these can be fine but too much of anything can create havoc.

We are living in a world where we are so afraid of carbs that we now replace everything under the sun with cauliflower and kale. PLEASE. Who actually wants cauliflower mashed potatoes, this is some sick joke.

Never in history have we ever consumed this many leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables but yet we are the sickest we have ever been riddled with thyroid and hormonal issues.

I have some clients coming to me that have been taking DIM supplements for years, yes, I said YEARS and making sure they get in their cauliflower mashed potatoes and cauliflower rice everyday, because… “carbs and sugar are bad for hormones but cauliflower helps to balance them!” And they wonder why they aren’t getting any better!

I challenge you to stop making these vegetables a priority in your diet and see how little you actually want them. I gag at the thought of kale or cauliflower. My body is saying “please bitch, give me more energy, what do you think I am?”

I’l pass on these low energy, heavy metal, nutrient sucking, thyroid attacking, digestion destroyer vegetables.

Stop Blaming Dairy For All Your Problems

“My face started breaking out again Laura, do you think it’s the dairy”

“My eczema and psoriasis flared, I should probably eliminate dairy right?”

“I had a painful period this month, do you think I am eating too much dairy?”

“I put on 10lbs in the past year, do you think I need to cut out the dairy?”

“I look 9 months pregnant because I am so bloated at night, I def need to stop eating dairy”

Girl, stop blaming the dairy.

How many symptoms have you blamed on dairy? Why is it the second a symptom pops up we immediately blame the dairy?

Oh silly me, I know why. We all became terrified and brainwashed due to vegan propaganda, biased documentaries and outdated studies on conventional dairy milk. All dairy is not created equal.

Did we have some weird epiphany in the past decade? Oh the one food we have been consuming since the dawn of time is now causing all illnesses and diseases? I think not.

It makes SO MUCH sense to milk an almond, soy bean or cashew and then throw a bunch of synthetic vitamins and minerals and gums into the mix 🙄

Funny, the people demonizing the dairy fail to mention anything about the quality of dairy we consume and what has happened over the years that is making us all sick and intolerant to so many foods.

The introduction of PUFAs in the forms of vegetable oils (canola, sunflower, rapeseed, etc..), synthetic iron laden foods, processed foods, the vegan, raw vegetable/ nut and seed paleo craze that is putting our digestive systems in such disarray that now we are intolerant to basically everything as we continue to consume all these gut irritating foods.

It has just been so engrained in us to blame the dairy when it’s not the dairy at all. It’s our wrecked guts. How many times have you eliminated dairy and found relief from your symptoms? Probably never because you end up switching over or consuming in more abundance the very things that were causing your issues in the first place.

 

The worst part. If you don’t consume it, you lose the ability to digest it. I can understand eliminating dairy short term, key word SHORT TERM, to help relieve a symptom while working on the root cause (most likely your gut) but you need to add it back in girlfriend. We can not be living in food fear for years and then expect to add it back in without issues.

Dairy is one of the most nutrient dense foods you can consume. You could literally survive and thrive just off of dairy if you needed to, that is how amazing this superfood is. YES, consider dairy a superfood, not some lame ass green smoothie loaded with synthetic green powders.

Before you go blaming the dairy, work on getting your gut in check. I suggest once you are ready and you have gone down the gut healing journey try adding it back in starting with goat or sheep milk/cheese in small quantities, then make your way to cow milk/cheeses. Remember quality matters, grass fed always, raw is best.

Are All Those Smoothies Doing You Dirty?

I know. Every influencer on IG is posting their daily green smoothie, juice or pretty salad. 🙄

For whatever reason, the second you go on a health kick or decide to eat “clean” (don’t get me started on this term) you start thinking you need to consume smoothies and salads every damn day (the greener the better) and if you don’t you’re a failure.

I mean any “health food” store or restaurant you come across will be glorifying the smoothie loaded with greens and super foods.

Well what if I told you that shit is overrated and probably doing more harm than good? Girl, I’d rather you go to a pub and order a steak and potatoes than get a green smoothie or salad at the juice bar 🙂

A few reasons why I don’t love a smoothie:

Smoothies put out your “digestive fire,” think of your digestive fire as the stomach acid, enzymes and bile needed to break down your food. What is an easy way to put out a fire? Cold liquids.

Not only that, digestion starts in the brain with the sight and smell of food and the production of saliva while you chew. This sends a signal to the brain that it’s time to eat and to start producing digestive juices.

Even if your smoothie is liquid, you still need to break it down + absorb + assimilate the nutrients from the food with these juices that no longer exist due to your cold lifeless smoothie.

No fire / no juice = digestive distress

Smoothies are loaded with thyroid suppressing ingredients like nut butters, nut milks + raw leafy greens.

Mmmmm who doesn’t want a nice big glass of rancid nuts, estrogen, heavy metals+ toxins?

I’l have 2 please! Because you know damn well you’ll just be starving an hour later because of how unsatisfying it was.

Not only that but the very process that smoothies are made (blended) allows pathogenic aerobic bacteria to thrive- you are just encouraging it.

If you insist on having a smoothie…

– Make sure you chew it + smell it + its not freezing cold
– Ditch the raw vegetables + nut butters
– Consume it with a meal. Smoothies are not meals.
– Make sure you include protein.
– Include fruit, collagen, dairy…

But in all honesty, for the love of your digestive system ditch the smoothies!
