The new online trend: “Hot girls have the worst stomach issues” Let’s talk about it…

We have all seen the new trend all over Tik Tok and social media.

I appreciate the recognition that people are struggling with digestive issues but this ain’t it.

Did their “hot girl” behaviors get them to this place?

Waking up bright and early to drink your black coffee, get in a fasted HIIT workout followed with a green smoothie with almond butter, dairy free milk and pea protein powder.

Lunch is a kale salad with nuts and seeds and a lean protein source.

Snack is a high fiber protein bar and green juice.

Dinner is a lean protein source with greens and cauliflower rice.

Ya know. Just doing hot girl shit. But actually dying inside.

I have an upset stomach just reading this meal plan and this has unfortunately become the new norm for “healthy” eating for the stereotypical desirable figure.

If you were a bird this sounds great but you are a grown ass woman that requires nutrients from easy to digest sources.

It’s no surprise that 98% of those diagnosed with an eating disorder are diagnosed with a Functional GI Disorder.

I remember I once used my “healthy” restrictive diet to get rid of digestive symptoms as a disguise for my disordered eating, food fear, and weight loss attempts.

Rather than popping pepto and tums 🥴eliminating foods and going on restrictive diets void of nutrients for the sake of your digestive system get to the root of the problem and evaluate what started the digestive issues in the first place.

– poor childhood diet
– under-eating
– over-exercising
– stress and nervous system dysregulation
– sluggish metabolism
– nutrient and mineral deficiencies
– estrogen and iron
– poor sleep
– how you eat + prep foods
– blood sugar regulation
– etc…

Is Your Cell Phone Making You Fat

You wake up and the first thing you do is start scrolling and before you know it time has gone by and your morning routine or workout plans are out the window. Hell, you can’t even go pee mid day without bringing it with you to scroll for those .2 seconds. You cook dinner and scroll. You spend the whole rest of your night scrolling, ditching any plans you had to read, stretch, walk, or be present with family. You get into bed and scroll. And you wake up just to do it all over again. It all comes back to cortisol baby! Not only is social media creating false beliefs that you need to lose weight due to its unrealistic filters and highlight reels creating negative thoughts about your body. These constant thoughts of being unworthy are stressful. But then let’s add some fuel to the already stressed out fire with those EMF’s and constant blue light exposure (that clearly were not created with our physiology in mind) and we have ourselves a wildfire. Cortisol is released when you’re under stress. This sends your body into fight-or-flight mode, temporarily pausing regular bodily functions and slowing your metabolism. While this hormone is essential to survival, it can become harmful in excess amounts. “Laura, I’m doing all the right things but I can’t lose weight.” Says the woman that is up on her cell phone and lap top all hours of the night or can’t get her shit together because her phone is impeding on routines and habits. “I have to be up, it’s the only time I have for myself, is there a supplement I can take to help with the stress hormones?” No. I don’t care if you are wearing 3 pairs of blue blockers and taking stress reducing adaptogens. You are not addressing the problem in the first place. Blue light blockers don’t give you permission. Evaluate do you really need to lose weight or are you running into the comparison trap on social media. I can guarantee its the latter. Take away social media for 30 days, a week, or just unfollow those people that are making you feel less than and see how much your life, health and thoughts around your weight change. Perhaps losing weight has everything to do with false expectations, influence + habits.

Got Estrogen Dominance? Your Gut Could Be To Blame!

I know. You are looking at this thinking Laura, what in the actual F is this?

Let me explain.

This is for the women that are doing ALL THE THINGS but are still struggling with estrogen dominance symptoms:

PMS
Irregular/heavy periods
Acne
Swelling/ water retention
Breast tenderness/ fibroids
Bloating
Weight gain
Digestive issues
Headaches/migraines
Sleep probs
Mood issues/ anxiety
Endometriosis
PCOS…

You get the gist. Literally every female problem can be brought back to estrogen dominance whether it be relative (in comparison to progesterone) or true.

I don’t care if your digestion seems great. I can guarantee your gut is to blame for your hormonal issues. Like I’ve said before and I will say again. We always work on minerals (hello copper) and gut health first. 9x out of 10 your hormones will balance as a result.

This stupidly detailed graph 👆🏻is simply just a representation of what goes wrong when your microbiome is not functioning optimally.

You have an entire microbiome dedicated to regulating estrogen levels. It’s called the estrobolome.

After estrogen circulates throughout the body doing what it needs to do it ends up in the liver where it’s broken down and packaged for elimination or reabsorption, then sent to your intestines. When in the intestines, estrogen will either be eliminated through your poop or reabsorbed and recirculated in the body by an enzyme called beta-glucuronidase, which breaks down estrogen to be excreted or reabsorbed.

When the system of estrogen metabolism is working the way it’s supposed to, you absorb and excrete the right balance of estrogen, creating happy hormone balance.

Recirculating estrogen in an already estrogen dominant body is the last thing we need!

Your estrobolome can only function well if your gut is healthy, there are so many of us walking around these days unbeknownst to us with a wrecked gut.

There is a constant conversation taking place between your gut and endocrine system. I will say it again, it ALWAYS comes back to your gut (and minerals) but hey, if you’re not absorbing your minerals due to poor digestion you’ll just end up in shits creek without a paddle. Get yo’ gut checked girlfriend.

Got Digestive Issues?

Raise your hand if this has ever happened to you?

I remember when I was struggling with my digestive issues far before I got into nutrition and alternative health. I will never forget walking into the doctor’s office after waiting an hour to be seen, pouring my heart out to this man about how my digestive issues were ruining my life only to be told to eat more fiber and that I needed to be referred out to run additional testing for thousands of dollars. I was in my early 20’s, I obviously didn’t have that dough to be throwing around but I thought it was my only option after seeing tons of other doctors, being told that my blood labs looked fine and I should consider taking anxiety medication.

I thought this was my last resort. I went through with the testing, only to be left with more questions when I was told “everything looks fine, just a little gastritis, here’s some Nexium.”

Zero explanation as to why I may have gotten gastritis, no diet advice, no lifestyle advice, no mention of other symptoms I was experiencing, how to reduce stress or how to eat to help gastritis.

To this day I don’t even think I had gastritis they needed something to tell me to make these tests seem viable.

It wasn’t until I started asking these questions (the ones on the right) + taking my health into my own hands that my digestive system finally started to heal.

How in the F can we walk into a doctor’s office to discuss our digestive issues and never discuss what we are eating? Digestion is the process of breaking down food! Food that gives us nutrients and life. What in the actual fuck? How can a doctor that specializes in digestion not discuss diet with you? MIND BLOWN.

Miralax? Are you kidding me? It contains anti-freeze!

Metamucil? Are you looking for a hormonal shit storm, maybe some diverticulosis? Maybe WORSE digestive issues? It contains the very ingredients that wreck it.

I love the famous blanket recommendation to eliminate dairy without knowing a goddamn thing about what a person is eating.

Don’t fall for this trap. Advocate for yourself. Work with someone that is on your team and truly wants to help you find the root cause to your issues. Don’t settle for less.

Superior Vegetables vs. Inferior Vegetables

“Do you eat vegetables?”

The #1 question I get asked.

I know. I am that crazy lady that always talks about eating meat, dairy and fruit. But YES, I am all about the vegetables, sometimes.

No the foods on the right are not inherently bad. But there are some things you should know before throwing a bunch of raw leafy green veggies into that smoothie or consuming tons of vegetables in the name of health.

Green leafy vegetables + cruciferous vegetables are low energy foods, have low digestibility + absorbability + simply are not that satiating.

The main reasons I say to avoid having an abundance of these vegetables:

+ Their defense mechanisms aka anti-nutrients that interfere with nutrient absorption

+ They are great at sucking up heavy metals from the soils

+ Their impact on thyroid health due to goitergens and toxicity

+ They are estrogenic and contain PUFAs

+ Glyphosate and chemicals they are sprayed with (yes, even organic)

+ Causes digestive distress due to anti-nutrients and overall being really hard to break down

You will get way more bang for your buck consuming animal proteins, dairy, fruit + peeled root vegetables, they do not contain the same anti-nutrients since they are protected from predators (animals, insects and humans).

So what’s a girl to do? I get it, sometimes you just want a veggie.

+ Never raw! Cook them REALLY, REALLY well to help with anti-nutrients and digestibility. Boiling is best.

+ Chew your smoothies + ditch the greens

+ If you must have a salad massage it and let it sit for 30 minutes of more to help break up some of the fibers and make it digestible

+ Vegetables should be considered a condiment not a whole dish

+ Eat them only when you crave them

+ Check in with your metabolism- check your temperature after eating such foods, do they warm you up?

+ Consume organic (that doesn’t say much these days)

+ Find a local farmer or grow yourself

+ Check Dirty Dozen

There is a huge difference between having them occasionally + trying to meet your protein and carb needs through them.

And girl, ditch the green smoothies already! They are NOT giving you the energy you need to be the badass bitch that you are!
