Women shouldn’t only feel alive for two weeks of the month

One thing a lot of women have in common is they feel like complete trash the week before their periods and during.

For some it starts as early as right after ovulation, giving them three weeks of hormonal symptomatic, emotional chaos. Their symptoms can take over their life and in some cases can ruin their life.

Another thing most of these women have in common?

Blood sugar dysregulation.

It’s no surprise that once they start working on blood sugar balance their moods get better, they are no longer an emotional wreck leading up to their periods, they are no longer in pain or having to spend their period in bed, they feel lighter, less anxious and honestly, are so much more fun to be around.

It may sound simple but by balancing your blood sugar consistently you can get your life back.

Sugar + Carbs are not causing (insert symptoms or disease here). So what is?

“Laura my blood sugar spikes after eating. I must be insulin resistant, I need to eliminate carbs”

Whoever decided that we needed to keep our blood sugar as low as possible literally has no idea how the body works. Your blood sugar going up after a meal is NORMAL. Shocking I know. We are fearing a natural, healthy response to food.

A genius idea…

How about we supply the body what it needs often and keep it steady throughout the entire day to prevent the blood sugar rollercoaster and stress response?

For as long as I can remember we have been blaming sugar and carbs for every health ailment known to man. How many times have you been told to “just eliminate carbs”

Let me ask you.

How can something be so detrimental to our health when it is what our bodies, our cells, require to function optimally? Really, think about it. Our bodies preferred + optimal source of fuel is glucose (sugar).

It’s all about consuming the right types of sugar + limiting PUFAs.

Hear me out.

PUFAs in your bloodstream compete with sugar + block your cells from being able to metabolize your blood sugar.

When we are no longer giving our body it’s preferred source of fuel, our body begins to release stress hormones to keep you alive + prevent your blood sugar from dropping too low.

First the rise of adrenaline triggers stored PUFAs to be released into your blood stream which then prevents your body from being able to use sugar promoting insulin resistance of the cell + cell death.

Then as cortisol rises + protein breaks down + glucose surges + it is blocked from entering your cells + then this causes more adrenaline to rise, which leads to more insulin resistance + more cell death.

It’s the stored PUFA, released by stress or hunger, that slow metabolism and cause your insulin “resistance,” carb intolerance or diabetes.

You are not addicted to sugar, your body is probably just craving nourishment from over-consumption of PUFAs that have been starving your cells of glucose.

Short term you may eliminate carbs + feel great (bandaid) until you don’t and your metabolism tanks, your thyroid sucks, your liver isn’t functioning, your digestion is terrible, + your hormones are wack.

8 Reasons Why You Can’t Seem To Tolerate Carbs

Girl, I will say it over and over again. It is NOT the carbs fault.

If you find that you can’t tolerate carbs whether they make you tired, they cause gas and bloating, or weight gain it is not the carbs fault but an underlying reason to WHY your cells are not able to use glucose for energy in the first place

If we can’t use carbs well, we need to address our body as a whole. Going low carb to fix insulin resistance only leaves you more insulin resistant. WE NEED CARBS! Our bodies main source of energy is glucose after all!

Let’s talk about the hormone insulin real quick. First of all, insulin is not bad, it in fact helps glucose (sugar) get into our cells to use for energy.
.
Where it goes wrong: your body starts over producing insulin when you are under chronic stress. Eventually your cells stop responding to these high stress demands and become resistant to insulin overtime. Your body produces higher amounts of cortisol (the stress hormone) which makes your cells resistant to insulin. When this happens too much sugar builds up in the blood instead of being used by our cells. Insulin resistance simply means your cells are having a hard time absorbing glucose.

What causes chronic stress? All of the above. Let’s take a look.

Minerals like magnesium, potassium, calcium, copper, + sodium are needed to let blood sugar into the cell and are necessary for thyroid function.

All carbs are not created equal. Focus on roots, tubers, dairy + fruit.

Always pair carbs with a protein + fat. Fructose, the sugar found in fruit helps us use glucose from starchy carbs like potatoes better. Consider pairing the two.

Excess estrogen will cause the pancreas to over produce insulin, so you can’t burn fat efficiently. Also leading to low progesterone, the hormone needed to balance blood sugar.

Eating loads of PUFA’s interferes with cell signaling inhibiting the conversion to glycogen.

Bacterial overgrowth in the gut causes inflammation + deficiencies worsening insulin resistance.

Studies show a direct correlation with fluoride + insulin + it impacts the way our cells take in glucose.

All our problems can be brought back to our relationship with carbs and how we use them.

Why Do I Wake Up Multiple Times Throughout the Night?

One minute you are sound asleep and then the next you are wide awake staring at the clock 1am, 2am, 4am… Maybe you had to pee, maybe your heart is racing, maybe you are experiencing anxiety or racing thoughts, maybe you are sweating, or maybe this is just your norm with out any real reason for it. Does this sound like you?

Altho it may be common to wake up throughout the night it certainly is not normal.

A sign of a good functioning metabolism is 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep a night. Unfortunately you can not catch up on sleep.

Sleep should be a non-negotiable. It is a time to heal and re-charge, without it you are mush, literally.

Looking to lose weight? Dealing with hormonal issues like PCOS or estrogen dominance? There is a direct connection to sleep and insulin resistance. Without it, you will never be able to drop those pounds or heal your hormonal imbalances or heal anything for that matter.

The #1 reason you’re waking up throughout the night especially at that typical 1-4am timeframe is LOW BLOOD SUGAR! The liver is responsible for maintaining our blood sugar levels and stores glucose from the carbs that we eat so it can release a steady stream of glucose to our cells so they can do their job. A stressed out body and an unhealthy liver can only hold onto glycogen for so long before needing to use other resources. Waking up throughout the night is basically your body screaming FEED ME.
This not only causes poor sleep but also early morning headaches, tiredness, shaking, dizziness, etc.

Are you eating enough throughout the day? Are you eating enough carbs? Are you going to bed without eating for hours?

Other things to consider:

⫸ Your bedroom temp
⫸ Too many lights or gadgets
⫸ Your going to bed too late, 10pm is key before that cortisol spike
⫸ You are not putting away devices or shutting off the TV a coupe hours before bed to wind down
⫸ Histamine issues that leave you waking up with a racing heart and mind
⫸ Too much alcohol or liquids
⫸ Mineral imbalances
⫸ Low progesterone

Girlfriend, ditch the idea that you will sleep when you’re dead, without it you already are!
